Why was my letter forwarded?
Why USPS Priority or Certified Mail May Be Forwarded or Held for Pickup
When using USPS Priority Mail Express or Certified Mail, your tracking information may sometimes show unexpected statuses, such as "Forwarded" or "Available for Pickup." Here's what these terms mean and why they occur:
Reasons Mail is Forwarded:
Mail forwarding occurs when the recipient has an active mail forwarding request filed with USPS, or when the provided delivery address is incomplete, incorrect, or has restrictions (such as PO Boxes or specialized addresses). In these situations, USPS redirects the mail to another location—usually the closest post office—to ensure it can be securely delivered or picked up.
Meaning of "Available for Pickup":
If your tracking status shows "Available for Pickup," USPS was unable to directly deliver your mail due to specific delivery instructions, restrictions, or address issues. Instead, USPS securely holds the mail at a local post office for the recipient or authorized person to collect. Typically, the mail is held for approximately 15 days before being returned to the sender.
What Happens if Mail Isn't Picked Up?
If mail designated as "Available for Pickup" isn't collected within the specified timeframe, it will be returned to the sender by USPS.
